Tungsten Carbide Strip Manufacturing Process

Tungsten Carbide Strip Manufacturing Process

Tungsten carbide strips are mainly manufactured through powder metallurgy processes such as mixing, pressing, and sintering. The specific steps are as follows:

1. Raw material preparation
The main raw materials are tungsten carbide (WC) powder and cobalt (Co) powder as the binder. According to the requirements of different products, the proportions of WC and Co are precisely adjusted.

2. Mixing and milling
Put the weighed WC powder, Co powder, and other additives into a ball mill, and add an appropriate amount of liquid (such as ethanol) for wet milling. The milling time is usually 16-72 hours to ensure that the powder is evenly mixed and the particle size reaches the required range.

3. Drying and sieving
The milled powder slurry is dried in a spray dryer to obtain dry powder particles. Then, it is sieved to remove large particles and impurities, ensuring a uniform particle size distribution.

4. Pressing and forming
Add a forming agent to the treated powder, mix it well, and then put it into a mold. Use a high-pressure press to apply pressure to form it into a tungsten carbide strip blank. The pressure range is generally 300-800MPa.

5. Sintering
Put the blank into a sintering furnace and sinter it in a vacuum or protective atmosphere. The sintering temperature is usually between 1380-1500°C, and the sintering time is about 24 hours. During the sintering process, the cobalt flows into the voids between the tungsten carbide grains to make the blank denser.

6. Post-processing
After sintering, the tungsten carbide strip is inspected for flaws, and then processes such as cutting, grinding, and polishing are carried out as needed to make its size and surface quality meet the requirements. Finally, it is packaged and stored.
