What is Lantern Festival?
The Lantern Festival (also known as Yuanxiao Festival or Shangyuan Festival), falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It marks the first full moon night of the Chinese Lunar New Year, and the official grand finale of the entire Spring Festival celebrations. For Chinese people, the Lunar New Year isn’t truly over until this joyful day comes to an end.
The Origin & Meaning Behind the Name
In Chinese, "Yuan" means "the beginning" (the first lunar month is called Yuan month), and "Xiao" means "night". The festival gets its name as it falls on the first full moon night of the new year, symbolizing new beginnings, family reunion, and the return of spring. With a history of over 2000 years, the festival originated in the Han Dynasty, flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and has been a beloved traditional celebration for Chinese people ever since.

Eating Yuanxiao (Sweet Glutinous Rice Dumplings)The signature food of the festival is Yuanxiao (or Tangyuan in southern China), round glutinous rice dumplings filled with sweet fillings like sesame, red bean paste, or peanut. The round shape stands for "reunion" and "wholeness" in Chinese culture, and every bite carries wishes for a sweet, harmonious, and lucky year ahead.

Lantern Viewing & Riddle GuessingAs the name suggests, lanterns are the soul of the festival. Vibrant Folk CelebrationsThe festival is also filled with lively folk performances: dragon and lion dances, stilt walking, firework displays, and traditional folk music. These vibrant activities turn the night into a grand carnival, full of joy and festive atmosphere.
A Romantic Festival in Ancient China
Beyond joy and reunion, the Lantern Festival is also known as the ancient Chinese "Valentine's Day". In ancient times, young women were not allowed to go out freely on most days, except on the night of the Lantern Festival, when they could walk freely with friends to view lanterns. This created precious chances for young people to meet and fall in love, which is why the festival is celebrated in countless classic Chinese poems as a day of romance and encounter.
